A: First and foremost is MAINTENANCE! The equipment needs to be cleanded and serviced by a licensed professional at least twice per year. Studies have shown that lack of proper maintenance can reduce equipment efficiency by 5-10%. In addition, most of today's filters need to be changed a minimum of every 90 days, and don't skimp on the filter. You should use a filter that has a high efficiency rating to help keep your air and equipment clean. After thorough cleaning, the service technician will adjust the Freon levels in your air conditioner to the manufacturer's specifications. Keep in mind that an over charged unit is just as bad as an under charged unit when it comes to energy consumption.
Q: At what temperature should I keep my thermostat?
A: During the spring and summer months, we recommend 78 degrees. Some people are not comfortable at this setting and require it cooler. But you need to keep in mind, for each degree below 78, you will increase your energy cost by a significant amount.
A: More than likely the air conditioner is undersized and/or working harder to keep to the desired indoor design temperature. An air conditioner works properly and efficiently at the temperature it was designed to achieve during installation. If there are hotter than normal days, the A/C will try to maintain the indoor design temperature. This does not necessarily mean there is an undersized unit. It means that the particular hot day is outside the normal range of the calculated design for the A/C unit. A proper load calculation from an air conditioning contractor can determine if the air conditioner is properly sized for the geographic location.
A: Icing on the condensor coil on the indoor portion of your air conditioner, or ice on the refrigerant lines outside can be caused by several conditions. The most common culprit is reduced or restricted airflow from a dirty air filter or restricted air ducts. In some instances, a refrigerant (commonly called Freon) leak can cause a condition where ice accumulates on the indoor coil. This condition may damage your system, so report any ice buildup to All Star as soon as possible.
A: Two common causes of heating and cooling problems are the electrical connections and the air filters. If your furnace or air conditioner isn't working properly, you should check these areas before scheduling service. If the unit isn't running, check that any electrical cords are plugged in, and no circuit breakers have been tripped. If the unit isn't running properly, check the air filter(s) for excessive buildup. Dust, pet hair, and other small debris collect in the air filter, which must be changed regularly to prevent problems with both your heating and your air conditioning. If the air filter is covered with dust or other particles, install a new air filter. This may solve the problem without a service call. A: It is perfectly normal for many air conditioning condenser units to make noise above normal when starting. This is due to factors similar to a car engine starting, the oil must travel before it starts to lubricate the moving parts. The other factor is that the compressor is not under pressure for the first few seconds of operating and this tends to make it louder in operation. This condition should only last for a few seconds and no more than say 10 seconds. If it is suddenly making more noise than usual or it lasts beyond a few seconds this is more than likely a symptom of an issue such as low refrigerant charge or it is in an over-charged condition. A: Water dripping from the refrigerant line set (copper pipe or tubing) is an indication of an improperly charged air conditioning system with or without insulation. The refrigerant levels in your air conditioning system is critical to proper operation and efficiency, both too little and too much refrigerant will cause poor operation, lack of capacity and lower operating efficiency. A properly trimmed refrigerant charge will not cause water to form (condense) on the copper refrigerant line set and if you see this you should call All Star immediately to first determine if the charge is low or high and then to correct the problem.
