The Benefits of Heat Pumps

Heat pumps have a variety of benefits over traditional HVAC systems. Here are just a few of those benefits.

Energy Efficient

When compared to traditional HVAC systems, heat pumps are a more energy-efficient solution. Heat pumps do not generate heat, they use electricity to transfer heat, which is more energy efficient. In some cases, heat pumps can reduce your energy consumption by up to 50%.

Dual Functionality

Heat pumps can heat and cool your home which reduces the need to have two separate systems. Heat pumps are great for a moderate climate like the Texas Gulf Coast.

Comfortable Indoor Temperature Control

Heat pumps provide a consistent temperature throughout the entire year, providing comfortable indoor temperature control. They are beneficial to Houston homeowners by dehumidifying the air and improving indoor air quality.

Air Source Heat Pumps

This is the most used type of heat pump. Air source heat pumps transfer heat between indoor and outdoor air. They work best in climates that do not see temperatures below freezing.

Ductless Mini-split Heat Pumps

This type of heat pump is a great solution for smaller living spaces and provides zoned heating and cooling solutions. Ductless mini-split heat pumps have an indoor unit and an outdoor unit. This system is easy to install and works most efficiently in temperatures as low as 5 degrees Fahrenheit.

How Do Heat Pumps Work?

Heat pumps operate on a basic concept, they transfer heat from one place to another. During summer months, a heat pump will remove the heat from the indoor air and transfer it to the outdoor air. During winter months, heat pumps remove heat from the outdoor air and transfer it indoors after passing through a refrigerant cycle.

Heat Pump Components

There are four main parts to a heat pump: an evaporator, expansion valve, condenser, and compressor. The heat pump compressor circulates refrigerant between the indoor and outdoor units. The condenser will absorb heat or emit heat depending on the operating setting. The heat pump expansion valve controls the refrigerant flow, and the evaporator absorbs or emits heat depending on the mode of operation.

How Much Do Heat Pumps Cost?

Although heat pumps may be more expensive to install than a traditional HVAC system, they make up for it with reduced operating costs and energy efficiency. The installation costs are highly dependent on the size of the area being heated or cooled, the kind of heat pump, and the difficulty of installation.
