Where Should Your Thermostat be Installed?

Installing your HVAC system thermostat is not something to take lightly. All Star A/C & Heating Services licensed technicians will need to assess your home and your HVAC system’s capabilities before determining the installation location of your thermostat. Here are a few guidelines about where your thermostat should be installed.

Never on an exterior wall

Exterior walls are subject to the effects of outdoor temperatures. In winter, the wall is cooler and in summer, the wall is warmer. The temperature sensors inside your thermostat will be affected. If the wall is hot because of the summer sun, it could cause your HVAC system to run unnecessarily. The same is true during the winter months but the reverse.

Never in a room with excessive sunlight

Installing your thermostat in a room with a large amount of natural sunlight is a bad idea for the same reason as above. Rooms with a large amount of sunlight are typically hotter and could cause your thermostat to be misled.

Never in your home’s entryway

Opening and closing your door can cause your thermostat to become confused. An open door can create a gust of air (warm or cold) that will rush past your thermostat sensors. It is difficult for your thermostat to register an accurate reading which will lead to inefficient use of your utilities.

Stay Centralized

The best place for your thermostat to be installed is an interior wall in the center of your home. The optimal height of installation is sixty inches from the floor. Installing your thermostat too high may be out of reach for some family members. In addition, hot air rises and cooler air falls. If your thermostat is installed too high or too low, you may get false readings.

The Benefits of Smart Thermostat Installation

Smart thermostats are far more than just a new gadget. They are a tool that can lead to better energy efficiency in your home and the lowering of your utility bills. Here are the smart thermostat benefits that will help make your thermostat installation choice easier.

SMART THERMOSTAT INSTALLATION

Cost Savings

A smart thermostat is more energy efficient and provides your HVAC system with more accurate information and temperature settings. Your HVAC components will work smarter and not harder resulting in reduced wear and tear, ultimately reducing repair costs.

Better Comfort and Temperature Control

With a smart thermostat, you have the power to control your HVAC system. Adjust the temperature setting without missing any part of your favorite team’s game. Forgot to turn the AC up or heat down when you leave? No need to worry, just adjust your settings through your smartphone.

Simple Programmable Settings

With simple interfaces and detailed apps, you can be sure that the temperature you set will activate as intended.

Text and Email Alerts

You can set your smart thermostat to send text or email alerts to notify you of any problems with your HVAC system. Your thermostat can alert you to any rises or dips in temperature. If your system loses Wi-Fi connection, you will be notified immediately.

Energy Usage Reports

Want to know when you use the most energy? How long was your AC or heater on last month? How many times did you change the temperature settings on your thermostat? Usage reports and user behaviors are just a click away.

What Types of Thermostats Are Available?

HVAC thermostats have moved from manual control panels to highly advanced smart appliances with many features and benefits. Here are the three major types of thermostats available.

Traditional manual thermostats have basic control to change the temperature settings and are dependent on the user to increase or decrease the temperature.

Programmable thermostats use automation to adjust temperature settings allowing temperatures to fluctuate throughout the day based on outside temperature changes and home occupancy.

Smart thermostats are Wi-Fi enabled thermostats that allow you to control your home’s heating and cooling through your smartphone. Many smart thermostats learn your temperature preferences and establish a schedule that automatically adjusts to energy-saving temperatures when you are asleep or away. Smart thermostats provide equipment use and temperature data you can track and manage.

Which Thermostat is Best for Your Home?

Determining which thermostat type is best for your home depends on how you use your HVAC system. The right thermostat will save you money and time by better managing your heating and cooling settings. When deciding which thermostat is best, we consider the following:
